Growing Calgary Corporate Strategy……

Inner Spirit Holdings Ltd. is making further progress on its corporate store strategy with the recent acquisition of additional locations in Calgary and Canmore in Alberta. Through its wholly owned subsidiary Spirit Leaf Corporate Inc., Inner Spirit Holdings has entered into an agreement with a Spiritleaf franchise partner to purchase the assets of three proposed cannabis retail stores. The acquisition presented a unique opportunity for the company, as the retail stores will be in Calgary's high traffic 17th Ave. downtown mission district and two premier locations in Canmore.  The stores have received their municipal recreational cannabis store development permits and construction is expected to commence shortly.  Inner Spirit is developing a retail network of Spiritleaf branded cannabis retail locations across Canada.  It is building its corporate store portfolio in Alberta with approximately ten wholly owned corporate locations to support its franchise network and enhance top-line revenue growth. The franchise network is being developed with more than 100 franchise agreements signed and four locations currently open in Alberta and Saskatchewan with a fifth location that opened last week in Royop Developments’ Stonegate Plaza in Calgary.  Then, last week, Inner Spirit Holdings added that Spirit Leaf Inc. has entered into an agreement with one of the initial 25 retail cannabis lottery winners in the province of Ontario, as selected by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. The lottery winner has made an application to open a Spiritleaf retail cannabis store on Princess St. in the heart of Kingston in anticipation of a targeted April 1, 2019 opening.  Spirit Leaf is collaborating with the lottery winner to build out the store location, license its brand and operating standards, and provide expert product training. "Our company's entry into the Ontario market is an important milestone for our business strategy and highlights our plans to locate more than 100 stores throughout the country that support and promote the Spiritleaf brand for Canada's cannabis consumer,” noted Bondar.  Spirit Leaf Inc. has entered into 20 franchise agreements for the Ontario market in anticipation of the Government of Ontario's plans to issue additional retail licences starting in December 2019, with intentions of opening, or licensing others the right to open, up to the maximum 75 stores initially expressed to be permitted by the provincial government.  The Spiritleaf units will locate in locations ranging from 1000 to 2500 square feet that are a suitable distance from schools, hospitals, daycares, etc.  Marino Locations Inc. has been retained as Spiritleaf’s national real estate consultant and Dave Marino is handling the search.

Opens DT VAN Flagship…….

In early February, fast-growing online vitamin, supplement and health food store Vitasave, opened a flagship retail location at 551 Robson St. in downtown Vancouver.  The streetfront unit is about 2100 square feet.  Vitasave is a five-year-old, Canadian owned and operated natural health company headquartered in North Vancouver, with warehouses in Vancouver and Toronto.  Originally an online concept on a mission to make health accessible and affordable, in 2016 it created its offline presence, with its first retail location in North Vancouver. “We can now serve downtown Vancouver just as we do in North Vancouver, where we have created a real community,” explained Adam Assadkhan, who co-founded the company along with his brothers, Ali and Amir.  Vitasave offers a wide selection of quality natural health products across hundreds of brands, from vitamins and supplements to bath and beauty products, to herbs, natural household products and pet products, all at 25 to 40 percent below traditional retail costs.  Vitasave’s new location also includes its signature plant-based Superfood Smoothie Bar. “A really big focus for us is our Superfood Smoothie Bar,” added Assadkhan. “Our smoothies are extremely popular at our North Van location. They’re perfect for those who are living active, fast-paced lifestyles.”

New West Island Breakfast & Sweets……..

Amy’s is a new breakfast, brunch and dessert concept that, in addition to a large-portion breakfast and lunch menu that includes healthy vegan options, also offers a with selection of desserts and gourmet donuts.  The new restaurant opened in November in a 2400 square foot, former Tutti Fruitti end unit location, adjacent to a TD Bank, in a plaza on St. Jean Blvd at Harry Worth St. in Pierrefonds in Montreal’s West Island area. Future expansion plans have not been reported while the company establishes the new concept.  With the opening, only two units remain available in the Groupe Shapiro-owned neighbourhood plaza at 4794-4830 St Jean Blvd., just south of Pierrefonds Blvd.  The remaining units are 900 square feet and 2500 square feet.  The suggested uses include retail, service and restaurants. The plaza is surrounded by an established neighbourhood of over 68,000 people with an average income range in excess of $88,000 per year. Steven Glazer at Groupe Shapiro is handling the leasing and notes that a new 2500 square foot spa/esthetician/massage studio is opening in March in the plaza.

Postal Strike Impacts Sales…..

For its third quarter that ended in late December 2018, Indigo Books & Music Inc. reported revenue of $426-million(Cdn), a 1.7 percent decrease from the $433.3-million for the same period last year.  The decline in revenue was driven partially by the residual impact of delayed renovations and meaningfully by the Canada Post strike. Leading up to the Canada Post strike, the company had a strong online growth trend reflecting customer desire to shop this channel. This trend reversed itself dramatically with the Canada Post disruption.  Comparable store sales for the quarter were flat.  "Our third quarter financial performance was challenging,” said CEO Heather Reisman.  “Given the factors which impacted the company, we were satisfied to sustain sales essentially on par with last year."  In an interview with Canadian Press, Ms Reisman added that the company will delay some large renovation projects while it absorbs some of what has happened.  In mid-October 2018, the Indigo opened its first U.S. location at the Mall at Short Hills in New Jersey and early indicators are showing that the concept is resonating well with customers. The 30,000 square foot location features IndigoKids and IndigoBaby, as well as a Café Indigo, along with Indigo's full assortment of books, gifts and exclusive in-house designed lifestyle products. During the quarter, the Indigo opened three new stores, while completing renovations in four others, bringing the total number of newly designed and renovated stores to 24, since the start of its retail transformation in fiscal 2017.
