At a time when construction projects have been stalled and many commercial real estate properties continue to struggle, on March 24th, Mayflower Mall in Sydney in Nova Scotia welcomed the first Old Navy outside the Halifax market. Old Navy is a global retailer that offers customers an easy way to shop fun, fashionable and affordable clothing in-store and online for the entire family. The 12,260 square foot store will be a welcome addition to the centre and will be the catalyst for more stores to come to the local market since the onset of Covid-19. A spokesperson for Old Navy shared that as part of the brand’s growth strategy, Old Navy is focusing on opening new stores in smaller markets like Sydney, to reach new customers who have had the opportunity to shop the brand online but haven’t had access to a local store. Managed by McCOR Management on behalf of investment partner Montez Corp., Mayflower Mall is the largest shopping destination on Cape Breton Island with a population of approximately 130,000 people. General Manager, Greg Morrison said, “We are very pleased to have Old Navy coming to the Sydney market. This is a nice boost to our mall and will be very well received by our customers.” Although times have been challenging over the last year for retailers, sales for the month of January 2021 at Mayflower Mall were up 20 percent over the same time last year; another positive sign emerging from a unique year of navigating through a global pandemic. In addition, the local community is embracing various construction projects planned in the next five years valued at over $1-billion(Cdn) including new health care facilities, schools, a cancer centre and a new Nova Scotia Community College. Leasing activity continues to build momentum with more announcements coming soon for Mayflower Mall. Presently some inline units ranging 1030 square feet to about 3720 square feet are available in the mall. McCOR Managements’ Brittany Heath is handling the leasing of the 360,000 square feet regional mall.
