Pops Up in the TO Market……
In the mid-1990s, husband and wife team, Cam Baty and Karina Birch purchased an independent soap company in Canmore in Alberta. Since then, the company, Rocky Mountain Soap Company has grown to become a manufacturer and retailers of natural bath and body products that are 100 percent natural and toxin-free. Still based in Canmore, the company now includes eleven permanent retail stores in Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba, an on-line sales component, a wholesale division and as of last month, in three ‘pop-up’ locations in Toronto. The chain the Ontario market with stores in the Toronto Eaton Centre and Yorkdale Centre on temporary six-month periods that will give the company an opportunity to evaluate the market. The company also opened in the Richmond-Adelaide Centre for an 18-month term. Each of the units are in the 800 square foot range. The company also adding a ‘pop up’ temporary location in Bower Place in Red Deer in Alberta shortly. According to a recent interview in the Rocky Mountain Outlook, Baty explained that the chain has been entertaining expansion into Ontario for years. In addition to new stores, the company has increased its production in its Bow Meadows plant to meet the demand created by the additional stores. “We can probably get up to 20 stores with the additions we’ve made here in Canmore,” he said. “We’re good for a portion of time here until we need to expand.” Jessica Millett at Oberfeld Snowcap is responsible for the Rocky Mountain Soap Company’s site selection in Canada. The stores are generally in 700 to 800 square foot units in the larger regional malls and urban high-street locations.
