In late 2025, Smitty’s restaurants opened in Fort St John in British Columbia and earlier in March 2026, the chain returned to Portage la Prairie in Manitoba with a location at 1941 Saskatchewan Ave. West. With about 85 corporate and franchise restaurants from Newfoundland to British Columbia, the 65-year-old chain is one of the largest all-day family restaurant chains in the country and plans call for at least 15 new franchise locations over the next three years. The chain targets high traffic and highly visible street locations in addition to free-standing pad sites and end caps, with patios where possible. Small towns units require approximately 2,500 square feet, larger markets accommodating dining and lounge approximating 3,500 square feet and larger. Part of the Equicapita Group of Companies, Business Manager James Jenkins is responsible for the Smitty’s expansion.
