Capt. Submarine is a regional Canadian quick service submarine sandwich chain founded in 1972 in Charlottetown in Prince Edward Island. Known for its oven-toasted subs, the brand offers a variety of sandwiches, including the popular donair and Montreal-style smoked meat subs. The chain emphasizes fresh ingredients, including 100 percent cheddar and mozzarella cheese blends, and a selection of fresh-cut vegetables. In early 2002, Truro, Nova Scotia-based Grinner’s Food System Ltd. acquired the Capt Submarine franchise system. Presently there are about 20 Capt Submarine locations from Eastern Ontario to Newfoundland, and with discussions presently underway with several potential owner/operators, the chain anticipates added three more this year. The Capt Submarine concept operates as an add-on to an existing business, often co-branding with Grinner’s Food System’s quick service Greco Pizza. Traditionally, the submarine concept is in a 200 to 600 square foot range with space for a minimum nine-foot counter area as well as additional space for storage.
