Following our report on small market anchors, we learned that Rural King, a family-owned retailer focused on serving rural communities, is expanding its presence in South Carolina later this week with the opening of a new store in Anderson. Located in the state’s northwest quadrant, it is the chain’s second location in the state. The store, about 95,000 square feet, is in the former Sears location at the Anderson Mall at 3101A N. Main St. that has been vacant for several years. The location incorporates enhanced shopping features, including mobile and self-checkout options, while maintaining the personalized customer service that has been a hallmark of the brand for more than 60 years. According to COO Michael Ladd, the expansion reflects Rural King’s commitment to communities that value hard work, outdoor living and the rural lifestyle. The store carries a broad assortment of merchandise, including apparel, power equipment, livestock and pet supplies, automotive products, home goods, sporting goods and seasonal merchandise from leading brands such as Carhartt, Stihl, Ariat and Wrangler. Rural King, also known as RK Holdings, LLP, is a 66-year-old company based in Central Illinois with over 150 stores in 18 states. The stores vary in size and generally in the 70,000 to 95,000 square foot range. Earlier in June, the company started work on a new $75-million Store Support Center Campus and headquarters in Mattoon.
