Later this week, Big Mamas & Papas Pizzeria restaurants opens its first location in Canada, in a new plaza on 97th St NW at 128th Ave NW in Edmonton. Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizzeria is a 30-year-old Los Angeles-based pizzeria concept known for the expanded size of its pizzas. The initial pizza size was 28-inches that could be ordered with a choice of toppings. Before long the Big Papa, a 36-inch pizza was added followed by the Giant Sicilian, reported to be the world’s largest deliverable pizza. At 54-inches by 54-inches, the Giant Sicilian is in the Guinnes World Record Book. The corporate and franchised Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizzerias feature a full menu of unique pizzas, pastas, salads, sandwiches, etc. with dine-in, takeout, delivery and catering services. A Master Franchise agreement is now in place that will see 15 Big Mamas & Papas Pizzeria restaurants opened in the Edmonton area and Joel Friedman at JSF Franchise Group Inc. and Ted Tsanas at Southbrook Business Development Group continue to handle the development growth for the concept. The chain operates in two formats, the full Big Mama’s & Papa’s model with the family dine-in, takeout and delivery service and Pronto BMPP format, a smaller size concentrating on the takeout and delivery service. The larger dine-in format with its full menu with beer and wine, will operate in 2200 to 2800 square foot locations in endcap locations in open centres and highly visible street front units. The units would have seating for 25 to 35 with a patio area and be in areas with above average household income levels. The smaller Pronto version would operate in 1200 to 1500 square foot end caps with patios in upper income areas. Ample parking and convenient access are necessary. Friedman adds that earlier this year, another Master Franchise agreement was signed for the Ontario market to open over 50 restaurants throughout the province.
