MUJI is a Japanese lifestyle retailer built on simplicity, functionality, and understated design. Its stores feature a curated range of merchandise, including clothing, household goods, furniture, stationery, travel accessories, cosmetics, etc. Products typically feature neutral colours, minimal branding, practical forms, and sustainable materials with the stores emphasizing thoughtful consumption, organization, and everyday usefulness, to reflect MUJI’s ‘no-brand quality goods’ philosophy. The brand was created in Japan in 1980 and today, there are more than 1,400 MUJI stores around the world, offering a wide array of lifestyle items and services. MUJI entered the North American market with its first location in Manhattan in 2007 and seven years later, entered the Canadian market with a flagship location in downtown Toronto. With its last opening on 59th St in New York in mid-Summer, there are 13 MUJI stores in the U.S. And with its opening in the Tsawwassen Mills in Delta in B.C. in the Spring, there are eight MUJI stores in Canada. Four are in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland region and four are in the GTA. The chain continues to explore opportunities across Canada and Jeffrey Berkowitz at Aurora Realty Consultants is handling its site selection. The chain targets high profile shopping centre locations and street front locations. The size required is in the 5000 to 20,000 square foot range.
