It’s been a few days since the U.S./Canada trade talks ended and in spite of all of the versions and reasons that have been put forth, only one comment stands out in my mind. In an initial statement, late on Friday night, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s comment that the proposed terms, “Called into question the reliability of any deal.”
While I might be hardly considered a diplomat, or for that matter, a seasoned negotiator, it would appear that one simple factor was missing………..trust.
If there’s a question that any agreement reached might not be honored down the road, why bother.
I didn’t think that was covered in Negotiating School. I guess I’ll have to take another look at that Art Of the Deal book.
