Last week, Henry Zavriyev, CEO of the Leyad privately owned real estate company, announced a series of major redevelopment projects across its Canadian retail portfolio as it transforms traditional shopping centres into community-focused destinations anchored by grocery stores, national retailers and entertainment concepts. He noted that the company is proactively repositioning space, including former Hudson’s Bay and Peavey Mart locations, to meet changing consumer preferences and enhance long-term asset performance. At Pen Centre in St. Catharines, Kingpin Bowling has exceeded expectations since opening, while construction is underway for Fairgrounds indoor pickleball and will soon begin on Funvilla, a family entertainment centre. Additional national retail tenants are also expected to be announced. At Londonderry Mall in Edmonton, Leyad secured Canada’s first Zellers store in a former Hudson’s Bay location. The mall will also add Fun For All, an Alberta-based family entertainment operator, while Laser City is nearing completion. St. Albert Centre in St Albert in Alberta has signed a long-term lease with Loblaws for a new No Frills supermarket, strengthening the centre’s grocery offering. Meanwhile, at Kindersley Centre in Saskatchewan, Leyad replaced a vacant Peavey Mart with Mark’s, with the new store expected to open in the coming months. The projects reflect Leyad’s strategy of combining grocery anchors, retail and experiential attractions to increase traffic, strengthen tenant performance and reinforce its shopping centres as vibrant community destinations.
